In a time with
an abundance of disposable bands, MENEW serves as a rare counter point
where talent and creativity meet. Their sound is a distinctive
synthesis that combines their unique style with influences that range
from contemporary greats to classic British rock. MENEW is proving that
music can be meaningful and catchy as they redefine their generation’s
rock and roll sound.
Shade – vocals and guitar / Key – piano and
synthesizers / Nathan Samuel Phillip – drums and backing vocals Born and raised near Toronto,
Canada, the brothers began their interest in music at age 6, having all
been classically trained in piano. Sharing this knowledge base and a
passion for writing music, the early foundation of the band was slowly
forming. They officially formed the
band when they saved enough money to buy a drum set. “We were not even
sure who would play the drums. It ended up being a competition for who
could do the longest drum roll,” remembers Nathan.
With the foundation in place, they needed a name. They wanted a symbol
more than a word, a universal name, sans language restrictions. And so,
MENEW (pronounced "men-u") was born. "It originally came from
merging two signs in our garage rehearsal space. We liked that it was an
ambigram,” explains Shade.
The brothers worked hard at developing a sound, which would uniquely
define their band. It attracted the attention of top-rated record
producers Rick Parashar, Scott Mathews, and even director Lyle Christie
to want to work with the band, pro-bono, because of the music, and the
belief in their drive and passion. Their current EP ‘Of The Future’ was
recognized by the Grammy Awards and short listed in four categories,
including ‘Album Of The Year’ and honored by Billboard for their single
‘This Isn’t Real’ as one of the top written songs of 2009.
MENEW know their way around guerilla marketing almost as well as the
stage and studio, and are fearless in accomplishing their mission to
reach as many people as possible with their brand of revolutionary rock
and live performance. We've seen them performing live on flatbed
trucks, and on stages lifted over 50 feet in mid-air in downtown city
streets. “We dream up these crazy ideas and we always try to out do the
last, even though they might be intended for stuntmen,” says Key.
From here, the boys set to work once more and headed into the studio at
the end of 2009 to start on their new full-length album. It is their
most ambitious record to date. Brilliant melodies, bold guitars, and
aggressive keyboards, unleashing some of the most righteous and soulful
material they’ve ever recorded. The upcoming album is all heart and soul
from start to finish. “It’s the album we have always wanted to make.
It's the first time we've taken the time to write in the studio and not
on the road in between shows," Shade comments, "and we're very excited
about the outcome." MENEW delivers a prolific and epic body of work,
showing the promise of what their career will bring. |
